Prepare for your future, the University Fair

The Island School University Fair held at the Sha Tin Wai Campus on Thursday 19 September 2019, brought 91 institutions from different countries together, helping students and their parents make decisions about their future.

We are very delighted to see more than 500 parents and students from Year 10 to Year 13 took their time talking to the university representatives and participated in the seminars. The Fair went very smoothly and we believe all of you have obtained fruitful information on that day. Special thanks to the student ambassadors for helping out with everything as well!

Highlight - Year 13 History Taster Lecture

On the 10th of September, the Year 13 History class welcomed Dr Sean Fear, a lecturer of Vietnamese history in the University of Leeds, to deliver a taster lecture on the role of South Vietnam in the Cold War.

As our most recent unit of study has been the origins of the Cold War over the past few weeks, Dr Fear's lecture proved to be extremely relevant within the context of our syllabus. The key idea behind his lecture was that the relationship between South Vietnam and the United States was more fraught than popularly imagined, and that the former was comprised of Vietnamese nationalists who actively resisted being a 'puppet' of the United States.

As students of history, this lecture opened our minds to the integral nature of having differing perspectives of the past. Rather than view history as a narrative of events, we emerged with the viewpoint that it is the debate between many accounts of the past, which are then evidenced by different sources. This is how the subject is studied at a university level, and we look forward to taking this knowledge within our own academic careers.
